Mittapheap World Market market moving to Pine Tree Shopping Plaza, loss to Munjoy Hill and Bayside

Mittapheap market is leaving its in-town Washington Avenue location and moving to the Pine Tree Shopping Plaza (Lowes, Full Belly Deli) on outer Brighton Avenue.

Makara Meng, owner of Mittapheap’s, said she researched her customers and found that 80% drive to the store. The new location has lower rent and more parking.

While first appearances may indicate an Asian or South-East Asia market, Ms. Meng caters to the full range of Portland’s ethnic cuisines: Africa, Asia, South America as well as fresh produce, meat, and fish. The majority of her customers are of African decent.

The move represents a shift in demographics and a loss to the east end of Portland.
